Community Redevelopment

Communities need to be built with the future in mind. Originally, Jordan Downs was built as World War II industry defense worker housing along with providing housing for the neighboring shipyard workers in the early 1950’s.

Fast forward almost sixty years later, the current community design seems old, outdated and does not offer the quality of life many residents would like to experience. Considering the current population trends and the growing number of people moving to Los Angeles, the city as a whole is committed to preserving its affordable housing stock.

Under the leadership of Congresswoman Maxine Waters, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Councilwoman Janice Hahn, the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles is committed to a one-for-one replacement of public housing. The HACLA also wants to create a mixed-income community of working professionals to reinvent Jordan Downs as a place for all! This will include community facilities and other amenities identified by the residents and community stakeholders through a series of community meetings.

The vision is as follows:

  • 700 Public Housing Replacement units
  • 700 Workforce Units
  • 700 Market Rate Rental

Total: 2100 units of housing for individuals and families!
